Music and Murder, Castlemaine State Festival – 26th March 2019

In Harken Well’s second performance at the Castlemaine State Festival, we present a programme of Renaissance and early Baroque music by composers of questionable character. For this special concert, Harken Well are joined by very special early music multi-instrumentalists John Weretka (harpsichord, tenor viol, voice) and Lucy Price (baroque ‘cello, bass viol).

Can art improve society even when the artist who made it did not? Harken Well presents a programme of sublime Renaissance and early Baroque music by composers who did terrible things.

In the midst of the “me too” movement, society has begun to question whether we should enjoy the art of Roman Polanski or Pablo Picasso, but what about Tarquinio Merula or Carlo Gesualdo? Is it possible to enjoy the art of such people, once they are long departed?

Harken Well are joined by very special early music multi-instrumentalists to present this programme in two halves, part Renaissance music arranged in consort, and part Baroque chamber music, all by wondrous composers, who were monstrous people.
